The quick answer
Check that the provider supports your vehicle, explains the complete quote and identifies who will attend. Read relevant reviews and verify any claimed accreditation with the organisation that issued it.
1. Confirm the vehicle and the required result
Give each provider the same registration, make, model, year and postcode. Explain whether you need a spare, all-keys-lost replacement, remote repair or vehicle access. A provider’s general car-key advertising does not confirm support for every model or security system.
For a smart key, describe the functions you currently use rather than choosing a part from its appearance. Ask what will be supplied and whether a customer-supplied key can be accepted before purchasing one elsewhere.
- How many working keys remain?
- Which locking and starting functions need to work?
- Does the job need assessment before a firm price can be given?
2. Ask for the whole quote and attendance plan
Clarify the total for the agreed scope, including the key, cutting, programming and attendance where applicable. Ask how additional work would be discussed before it is carried out. A call-out price and a completed key-service price are different things.
Confirm the business name, who will attend, the proposed location and current availability. We accept enquiries around the clock, but an enquiry does not guarantee immediate attendance. Exact postcode, vehicle requirements and the team’s availability determine the booking.
3. Read reviews alongside other checks
Look for recent descriptions of comparable vehicle-key work, communication and the final bill. Compare more than one source and use reviews to form questions, rather than treating every rating as proof of competence.
The Master Locksmiths Association recommends checking claimed accreditations directly. Ask what the stated membership covers and check the organisation’s own directory. Establish whether the accreditation applies to the business, the individual attending or both.
4. Agree the handover and aftercare
Ask which relevant functions will be checked with you after the work and how to report a problem. Keep the invoice and the description of the supplied key or repair. Confirm the provider’s own written aftercare terms instead of assuming that all keys have identical cover.
When contacting us for London, Surrey, Slough or Reading, send your vehicle details and exact location. We can then discuss the appropriate service and give you practical booking information without relying on a generic “best locksmith” ranking.
Common questions
Do luxury car keys need a specialist?
Choose a provider who confirms experience and suitable equipment for your exact make, model, year and key system. Support may differ between generations of the same luxury brand. Ask whether the proposed work can be completed at the vehicle or requires another specialist or dealer route.
Is the highest review score enough to choose a locksmith?
Use it alongside relevant review details, compatibility confirmation, clear pricing and verifiable business information. A score alone does not describe the proposed job.
Should a locksmith ask for proof of authority?
Ask which identity and vehicle-authority documents are required before the appointment. Security-related work should be arranged with the owner or an authorised person.
Does the cheapest advertised price include programming?
Only if the quote says so. Confirm the key, cutting, programming, attendance and any assessment charges for your vehicle.
Can every auto locksmith program every fob?
Do not assume universal coverage. Confirm support for the exact vehicle and proposed key before booking.
