1. Check whether a spare is available
Check the places you last used the key and whether another driver has it. If a spare exists, find out whether someone can safely bring it to you. Let the locksmith know if you have any key that still starts the car.
2. Gather the vehicle details
- Make, model, year and registration
- Your exact location and postcode
- Whether all keys are missing or one remains
- The type of key, if you know it
You do not need to know the technical name of the key. A description or an existing photo can help explain whether it has buttons, a blade or keyless start functions.
3. Explain whether the car is locked
If the keys are inside, you may need emergency car opening. If the keys are missing, you may need a replacement key and programming as well as vehicle access. Tell us both parts of the situation.
4. Confirm the plan before the visit
Ask for vehicle compatibility, the total quote and a current arrival estimate. Our pricing guide explains what to check. Also ask which ownership or identity documents you should have available.
5. Think about the missing key and a backup
Tell the locksmith if you suspect the key has been stolen. Ask whether any key security changes are available for your particular vehicle, and which existing keys will remain usable.
Once the immediate problem is resolved, consider an additional spare and store it separately from your everyday key.
